State holds firm on decision to close schools amid ‘evolving situation’

The government is holding firm on its decision to close schools today even though severe storms didn’t eventuate this morning.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yesterday announced the decision in light of forecasts predicting violent weather conditions.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey says the government doesn’t regret making an early call.

“The weather situation is still very unstable,” he told Neil Breen. “The advice to people today is we’re expecting storms in the afternoon.

“There’s still a very strong and genuine risk of flash flooding in the afternoon with these supercells still a real threat.

“The supercell action was less than we expected yesterday afternoon but if there’d been a supercell storm and we had kids out in it, I think people would be rightly critical of us.”
