Should Australia become a republic?

Article image for Should Australia become a republic?

The Australian Republican Movement has announced it will push for an Australian head of state.

The movement has formed an advisory panel in a renewed effort to make Australia a republic.

Among those on the panel include former Labor leader Kim Beazley, former Premier of Victoria Steve Bracks and former Liberal Senate leader Robert Hill.

The panel will act as patrons for the Republican cause and provide legal guidance and campaign strategy.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fisher is also a member of the panel and speaks to Michael McLaren about why we should make the change.

“We are a country that should stand with its own head of state.

“I don’t think it should be tied to who’s on the throne.

“It does bother me. I’m a proud Australian.

“We’re going to be squeezed off the map by the British.”
