An eighth person has died in the state’s flood crisis.

Police say a man and his dog died after his car was swept up by floodwaters in the Currumbin Valley this morning.

Around 3am, police were called to the scene following reports of a car in trouble near Stackpole Street.

It’s understood the car was driven up to 40 metres in to the water.

Nine News Reporter Mackenzie Colahan told Sofie Formica rescue crews weren’t able to get to the vehicle until hours later.

“That’s horrible news,” he said.
