Newly re-elected Queensland Labor Senator Murray Watt says while it’s disappointing the party may not increase it’s seat count in the state from 2019, it’s important to keep perspective.

It comes after Labor shadow minister Terri Butler lost her inner-city seat of Griffith to the Greens.

And the Greens could possibly snare another Labor seat, with the race still too close to call in Brisbane.

It could leave Queensland with six members of the new parliament, a net-zero gain from 2019.

“I think one of the things that has to be recognised though, in terms of Queensland, is exactly how far we started behind in this race as a result of the wipeout that we saw in 2019,” Senator Watt told Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive.

“The margins that we had to overcome, whether we’re talking about outer-suburban seats like Ford or Petrie or Dickson, or some of the regional seats, particularly in central Queensland.

“They were huge margins that we had to overcome.”
