The Taxi Council Queensland has moved to quash rumours of a big taxi strike when Brisbane plays host to the State of Origin decider on Wednesday night.

There are murmurs on social media of a strike being planned for 5pm Wednesday night and 4am Thursday morning.

It could spell disaster for the time 52,000 footy-mad people are trying to head to Suncorp Stadium.

But CEO of the Taxi Council Queensland, Blair Davies, said he didn’t predict taxi drivers would follow a few rogue operators.

“We’ve got a couple scallywags threatening to have a taxi strike, but we don’t see anybody following them,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.

“Quite frankly it’s a big night for cabbies, they will get out there and make good money providing services to people to get to the footy and get home again, we think it’s the wrong time and wrong thing to be doing on State of Origin night.”

Neil said he could sympathise with taxi drivers feelingĀ  the pinch of rising fuel costs, but striking on Origin night would be a bad call.
