Rogue unions to pay price as ‘lawlessness’ lands in Coalition’s crosshairs
Rogue unions are in the Coalition’s firing line today as the federal government promises to double fines for breaches.
Maximum penalties for construction unions found to repeatedly breach laws will doubled to $444,000 while individuals could be slapped with up to $88,800.
Attorney-General and Minister for Industrial Relations told Neil Breen unions treat penalties “as just a cost of doing business”.
“The [CFMEU] is a serial offender who is well-resourced, having more than sufficient means to pay any penalty the court might have been disposed to impose,” she said.
“Lawlessness on building sites is business as usual; the system has to change.”
