RNA to hand out free masks for Ekka showgoers amid third COVID wave

Free masks will be on offer at the RNA Showgrounds’ entry gates when the Ekka returns to Bowen Hills this year.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath has this morning announced the initiative as Queensland grapples with its third COVID-19 wave.
It comes amid calls from experts for children to mask up at the event, with the state’s vaccination uptake for eligible children the lowest in the country.
“The last thing we want when the Ekka returns is to see showgoers having to spend the next week in isolation with COVID-19 or influenza,” Ms D’Ath said.
“With the pandemic now in its third wave, we can’t rely on vaccination alone. It’s crucial that showgoers take precautions to stay safe at the show.”
RNA boss Brendan Christou said patrons will be encouraged to mask up when in indoor pavilions.
“More than 70 per cent of the show is outdoors with more than 20 hectares of open space for Ekka visitors to walk around and enjoy,” he said.
