Redland City fires back after state government steps in to take over housing strategy

Redland City mayor Karen Williams has hit back in defense of her council’s housing supply strategy, which has been taken over by the state government in an extraordinary move.
A frustrated Deputy Premier Steven Miles said today the council has failed to update it despite being asked to “repeatedly”.
“The current housing strategy for the city is dated 2011 and is based on 2006 population data, meaning it does not take into account significant population and housing challenges in the past decade,” Mr Miles said.
But Mayor Williams has hit back in a statement this afternoon, refuting Mr Miles’ claims, saying “council is achieving the housing targets set for them by the state government”.
“The state government also signed off on our City Plan in 2018 and our current Redlands Housing Strategy takes us to 2031,: she said.
“It is also disappointing that the media was reporting on this decision before the Deputy Premier advised Council.
“The Redlands community will accept housing growth when it comes with the needed infrastructure such as roads, hospitals and schools.
“A housing strategy without a plan for infrastructure is not a plan.”
