Ray Warren ’emotional’ ahead of ‘landmark’ State of Origin call

Legendary sports broadcaster Ray Warren admits he’s feeling “emotional” ahead of a “landmark” State of Origin series.

It all kicks off tonight with New South Wales going up against Queensland in Game I at the MCG.

The Continuous Call Team will have the number one coverage in radio, but its ‘the voice of rugby league’ Ray Warren that many Australians will be hearing on Channel 9.

Game III of this series will take ‘Rabbs’ to 90 State of Origin calls, a record unlikely ever to be surpassed.

He tells great mate Ray Hadley it’s hard to believe how his career has panned out.

“I knew I wanted to be a sports commentator when I was about six or seven.

“To be able to do it, and this series aiming at doing 90 Origins, is sort of a landmark occasion for me.

“It’s also quite emotional because you know the end is not far away.”

Ray wouldn’t have a bar of it though telling Rabbs he’s got plenty more games left in him, “The end is not night Rabbs. I’m tipping you to get to a hundred.”

“Well, I’ll tell you something. That’ll be another one of your dud tips,” jokes Ray Warren.

The two Rays go through their gameday process and talk about the difference between calling for TV and radio.
