Three players have walked away from the State of Origin decider with what Ray Hadley describes as “utterly inadequate” penalties for a series of brutal incidents.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Matt Burton and Dane Gagai have each been pinged by the match review committee and will be fined a fraction of their match fee.

Burton and Gagai, who were sent to the sin bin after a bloody punch-on in the first minute of the second half, have been hit with Grade 2 striking charges, which carry a penalty of 23 per cent.

Fa’asuamalaeaui was also charged in the incident for dangerous contact Burton’s head and neck, being hit with a Grade 1 charge that carries a seven per cent fine.

He was also charged earlier in the match with a Grade 2 careless high tackle charge for a swinging arm to the head of Burton – an incident he was lucky to escape the bin for.

In total, the charges mean Fa’asuamalaeaui’s will give up a total 20 per cent of his match fee.

Despite the clashes, which saw the electric decider resemble games of the ’80s and ’90s, all three players will be free to take the field for their respective clubs in Round 18.

Ray Hadley noted while league fans are often quick to excuse rowdy behaviour in Origin matches, last night was a bridge too far.

“I’m afraid I can’t defend this; it’s indefensible,” he said. “There’s a problem here.

“In the case of Dane Gagai and Matt Burton, it’s about $3500, and for the two charges for big Tino, it’s about $4000 in total; a drop in the bucket compared to what they would’ve earned.

“We can’t have, on the biggest stage in rugby league, players standing there, toe-to-toe, punching the tripe out of each other and then being fined a rather paltry amount of money.

“It doesn’t send a good lesson to people who are thinking of letting their children play rugby league.”
