Why Qld’s first case of monkeypox presents a “very low” public health risk

Dean & Sofie

Monkeypox has spread to Queensland with the state’s health minister confirming our first case of the virus.

The person is self-isolating at home in Brisbane under virtual monitoring.

Contact tracing is now underway to identify anyone who may have come into contact with the positive case.

But Health Minister Yvette D’ath says the public health risk is “considered very low”.

Infectious diseases expert Paul Griffin told Laurel, Gary and Mark said it’s “relatively hard” to transmit the infection.

“People do need close contact with the fluid from those blisters or other fluids to be able to get this,” he said.

“When we find cases, we can isolate them and hopefully interrupt transmission that way.”
