Queensland Premier responds to diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics

Australia will follow the United States in a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Australian athletes will still be able to compete.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says it “will come as no surprise that the Australian government will not be sending any official representatives”.
“We have been raising a number of issues that have not been received well in China and there has been a disagreement on those matters,” Mr Morrison said.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed representatives from Queensland will not be in attendance, despite suggestions it would be necessary for Brisbane 2032 preparations.
She has released the following statement:
“Attendance of government representatives at the Beijing Winter Olympics is a matter for the Federal Government.
“The Federal Government’s decision includes Queensland.
“We wish our athletes every success.”
Negotiation expert Leonie McKeon told Sofie Formica the decision was “another nail in the relationship” and misses the opportunity for reparations.
“This would’ve been a really good opportunity for us to try and mend this relationship,” she said.
“At the moment, we’re just looking at everything China is doing wrong and trying to criticise them.”
