Qantas makes biggest ever changes to rewards program

Article image for Qantas makes biggest ever changes to rewards program

Qantas is offering a million extra seats and a slashing of carrier charges as part of the changes to their Frequent Flyer program.

The extra reward-based seats will apply on its aircraft and those of partner airlines, with booking fees that come with the points-based purchases to be cut by up to 50 per cent on international flights.

The changes to the program are the biggest in over 30 years and are expected to cost the airline $25 million per year.

Qantas Loyalty CEO Olivia Wirth tells Ross Greenwood more people use their reward points for the economy than business class.

“There are four times more economy seats redeemed for our international service than there are business, for example.

“We want our members… to be as engaged as possible in the program, which means they’re gonna be more likely to fly with us, more likely to buy with us.”

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce tells Ross it was a smart business move.

“We think people will value the access to the seats and value the discount in charges more than the extra cost of the points.”
