Property and lives at risk as Australia braces for extreme fire danger

MARK LEVY

Firefighters are bracing for another challenging day, with hot temperatures and dry winds expected to exacerbate the bushfire crisis.

Crews have worked through the night to prepare for severe fire conditions on the NSW South Coast, with temperatures expected to climb above 40 degrees in Sydney’s west.

There are currently 55 uncontained bushfires across the state, with extreme fire danger forecast for the Southern Slopes.

There are ten Total Fire Bans in place, including in Sydney.

Conditions are also expected to worsen in Victoria, where two emergency warnings are in place.

NSW Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott tells Mark Levy there are 2670 firefighters on the front line today.

“Tragically though, Mark, the figure I’ve been given this morning regarding homes that have been lost, we’re at 1995 so it is quite possible that in the next 24 hours that figure will reach 2000.”
