Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the aged care sector system in Australia is “holding up” despite unions describing dire staff shortages.

Neil Breen said it was a crisis and questioned if the issue was prioritised at National Cabinet.

“We discuss it at every meeting of National Cabinet,” Mr Morrison said.

He said there was “no easy way through COVID and in aged care the challenge is the greatest” and acknowledged the tough challenges, including staff doing double shifts.

“We are seeing results thereĀ  … compared to other countries, the aged care system in Australia is holding up.”

He also brushed off a frosty exchange with 2021 Australian of the Year, Grace Tame at an event in Canberra this week.

Ms Tame avoided eye contact with Mr Morrison while shaking his hand.

“When anyone comes to our home, when Jenny and I invite someone to our home, we greet them with a smile,” Mr Morrison said.

“I haven’t raised any issues about this.”
