An emergency National Security Committee meeting will reconsider the arrival of skilled migrants and students.

It comes after detection of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 overseas.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced this morning the committee will meet this afternoon.

An emergency National Cabinet meeting with all premiers and chief ministers will also convene in the coming days.

Skilled migrants were set to be welcomed back into Australia from Wednesday.

Mr Morrison told Sunrise the variant moved from an ‘under investigation’ category to a ‘variant of concern’ in a short period of time.

“We immediately put those extra controls in place on Saturday.”

Neil Breen said he hopes this won’t incite panic among the premiers.

“The last thing anyone wants is these border reopenings, and our freedoms, and December 17 and everything being blown up by this new strain.”
