After six hours of debate, the US government’s House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Trump for abuse of power, 230 votes to 197.

The two articles Mr Trump have been charged with concern abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

On the article of obstruction, the House voted to impeach with 229 yeas to 198 nays.

Representatives voted along party lines, with the Democratic Party holding the majority in the House of Representatives.

However, four Democratic representatives broke rank to vote undecided or against the articles of impeachment.

The decision makes Donald Trump the third President in US history to be impeached.

Impeachment does not remove the President from office.

Mr Trump will now face trial in the Republican-controlled Senate where he is highly likely to be acquitted.

However, “it is a permanent mark against his name now,” says Nine News correspondent Charles Croucher.
