Premier to put cap on rent increases amid housing crisis
The amount of times property owners and landlords can lift rents in Queensland is set to be capped to once a year.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has taken to social media to announce the new reforms, coinciding with a second housing roundtable to be held in Brisbane today.
The idea of a rental cap was first floated last week but it’s expected the reforms will no include any government mandated caps how much rent can increase by.
9News reporter Peter Fegan told Laurel, Gary & Mark the plan has got some pushback from the LNP.
“[They’re] saying this is a little bit too little, too late and it’s actually not a rental cap and the Premier is getting this wrong.
“What they’re trying to argue is that a lot of people do get a 12-month lease and at the end of that 12 months, they might move out, and there is no cap, and then as soon as someone moves in, they’ll up the rent again.”
