An investigation is underway after a popular Longreach tourist attraction unexpectedly sank.

The famous ‘Pride of the Murray’ paddle wheeler sank this morning in the Thomson River just weeks before the region’s peak tourist season.

Tourism operator Outback Pioneers learned from police early today that the boat had sunk around 7.15am and an investigation has now commenced.

Documentary filmmaker Dean Miller joined Sofie Formica where he expressed his shock and love for the vessel.

“It’s very sad to say that the ‘Pride of the Murray’ now sits at the bottom of Thomson in Longreach.

“[I] cannot believe the news I heard this morning.”
