Police union fearful of stretched resources ahead of vaccine mandate

Queensland’s vaccine mandate comes into effect tomorrow, with the police union concerned about resourcing issues in the face of violent, aggressive unvaccinated patrons.

Vaccine certificates will be mandatory for venues like theatres, cafes, restaurants, pubs, and clubs from tomorrow, December 17.

There are concerns some customers could get aggressive, and police may need to be called in.

President of the Queensland Police Union, Ian Leavers, said he is hopeful the community “self-regulates” to some degree.

“It is going to be a real challenge for us, I would say,” he told Scott Emerson.

He said he’s hopeful that police won’t need to be called in most cases.

“I am concerned that some people, the minority, will do the wrong thing, and it’s going to challenge us.

“But what I think we need to do, is be straight up, the Commissioner is going to have to resource this intensively, whether it’s on overtime otherwise.”

He said “putting it on back on businesses” was unfair.
