An incident is tonight unfolding in Toowoomba, after the occupants of a stolen car fired shots at police.

Around 2pm, police spotted a suspected stolen silver Mitsubishi SUV when one of the occupants fired towards police, striking their car.

Officers were forced to discharge their firearms in response, with the SUV speeding away.

Later, one man turned up Toowoomba Hospital, with a gunshot wound.

Residents on Blackwood Street, Derwak Street and Dempsey Street are advised to stay in their homes as a precaution.
