A man has been charged with murder following the sudden death of an elderly woman on the Gold Coast.

Officers were asked to do a welfare check in Varsity Lakes around 1.30pm on February 25, when they found the woman.

The man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition, where he remains under police guard.

He is expected to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today, pending hospital clearance.

A crime scene has been established while police investigate.

The woman and the man are both aged in their 80s.
