Police officer ‘humiliated’ during five-year fight to clear name

Gary Hardgrave

A police officer with more than 20 years’ experience says he was humiliated for years after being accused of unfounded lewd conduct in the office.

The sergeant, who can’t be named for legal reasons, was accused by two colleagues of exposing himself in a road policing unit in April 2017.

Despite the sergeant’s vehement denial of the claims, he was demoted and moved to a separate office on reduced pay.

It took five years for the claims to be exonerated, after appealing the matter before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Nine News reporter Josh Bavas told Neil Breen the Tribunal revealed previous misconducts of the sergeant’s two accusers.

“One of those senior constables had previously accepted gifts in favour of giving misleading evidence before the district court about a criminal matter.

“QCAT was of the mind that they weren’t a reliable witness.”
