World’s best practice in road safety?
A recent statement by N.S.W. Transport Minister Andrew Constance that N,S,W, was third in the world in terms of road deaths per capita behind Sweden and Finland inspired a car enthusiast friend Terry Daly to write with some counter thoughts. Terry pointed out that deaths per kilometre driven would be a far more accurate assessment of road safety. The combined land mass of Sweden and Finland 768,000 square kilometres compares with that of NSW at 801,000.
The combined Sweden and Finland road toll at 428 compares with NSW’s toll at 287. Keeping in mind that during the winter months temperatures in these northern hemisphere countries can drop below -20 with a lot less motorists on the road Terry made the point that motorists in N.S.W drive substantially more kilometres per year over the course of a full year. Also in Sweden and Finland you need to be a year older at 18 to obtain a license.
