Why Aussies love going to the cinema

Mike Jeffreys

Mike speaks with Dr Ruari Elkington, Senior Lecturer in Creative Industries & Chief Investigator at QUT Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC), Queensland University of Technology, about his recent study featured  in ‘The Conversation’ that reveals Australians’ enduring love for cinema over the last century.

Alongside Tess Van Hemert, his research of cinema cultures and practices emphasises how cinemas serve as hubs for social, cultural, and economic activities.

Despite challenges like cost and inconvenience, Australians consistently support cinemas, as evidenced by the billion-dollar box office in 2023 and continued popularity post-COVID.
