Whatever happened to Anthony Albanese’s promise of transparency?

Mike Jeffreys

Mike discusses with Dennis Shanahan, The Australian Newspaper’s National Editor, the government’s extensive use of non-disclosure agreements to silence organisations and conceal legislative plans.

Mr Shanahan notes how this practice contradicts Anthony Albanese’s pledge of transparency and distorts the original intentions of the Rudd government – highlighting instances where industry groups were compelled to sign such agreements, limiting public discourse on critical issues like resources tax and environmental laws.

These agreements stifle dissent and disrupt negotiations, ultimately undermining bipartisanship and transparency in legislative processes, including recent proposals concerning religious freedom laws.
