What is the ‘fourth trimester’ of pregnancy?

Mothers world-wide will be quite rightly the focus of celebration this Sunday, with Mother’s Day recognising them for the critical and irreplaceable role they have in our lives, considering we literally wouldn’t be here without them.

The first, second, and third trimester, is often discussed in great detail, but the time after the birth when the baby has arrived, when the mother has to cope with massive changes in her life, is not. It is such a critical time for the mothers, this post-pregnancy period has now been unofficially dubbed the ‘fourth trimester’.

Sydney Adventist Hospital Obstetrician Dr Peter Wood joins John Stanley to discuss what the ‘fourth trimester’ refers to, and why it’s so important.
