Volvo outperforms its European competition in sales

David Berthon

The prestige and luxury car sector has generally suffered this year, most European importers showing negative growth however Volvo has bucked the trend, enjoying one of its best years on record.

October sales for Volvo were 68 percent up on the same month last year. Showing the strength of prestige SUV’s at present 80 percent of Volvo’s sales came from their three SUV’s – the popular mid-size XC60, updated last year enjoying strong demand – the Swedish brands top seller while the relatively new compact XC40 achieved 1200 sales in October, its best sales month to date and gaining in popularity as supply improves. And the excellent XC90 has enjoyed a 9.9 percent lift this year. Volvo’s passenger car sales on the other hand have slowed – mostly down with the large S90 showing modest growth. Volvo is of course these days owned by the Chinese company Geely, however their products are still very much designed and engineered in Sweden.
