Toyota’s Kluger SUV – a good all-rounder as a large family carrier

Driving Toyota’s fourth generation seven-seat Kluger SUV today – a popular family carrier in the previous series. I tested the entry 3.5-litre Kluger GX front wheel drive eight-speed automatic at $52,800 drive-away.
A sensible choice on several scores given the current high petrol prices with its ability to run on regular 91 unleaded. I managed economy of 10.6L/100 with a mix of city and freeway driving.
What you immediately notice with the latest Kluger is its improved refinement – improved power and torque from the 3.5 V6 yet quieter with better sound deadening – the performance aided by an excellent eight-speed automatic. You get some chirping from the front tyres under very strong acceleration as they seek traction but for better grip and road holding you could opt for the all-wheel drive GX model for another $4,000.
Toyota have sensibly equipped the Kluger with 235/65 series tyres and their compliant nature provides a quality ride – getting the ride and handling balance in a SUV that can carry from one to 7 passengers and their luggage is not easy but I found it more than competent with a full compliment of grandchildren on board. For me a power tailgate is an essential item for versatility on an SUV and the GX disappointingly misses out in this regard. Few other complaints though.
