Toyota’s Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid hatch – frugal and fun

David Berthon

Driving the world’s best-selling car today – the Toyota Corolla, a small car with an enormous reputation here, now in its 12th generation.

The 1.8-litre petrol Ascent Sport auto kicks off the Corolla range at $25,395 but I wanted to feature the Hybrid Ascent Sport from $27,395 with its ability to sip fuel from as low as 4.2 litres pre 100km.

In fact, when I filled it up it suggested its available range was 960km. This model features a 1.8-litre 72 kW petrol engine linked to a 53 kW electric motor – the combined power output 90KW driving through a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Visually striking for a small car with expressive lines the body is compact however rear legroom is tight and boot space small by small car standards. However, the standout features of this small five-door hatch are build quality, fit and finish, economy and the sheer joy of driving. Front seat space more than comfortable with good storage. But for the most part the Corolla will rarely carry large adults in the rear, and probably small kids. Instrumentation not as good as Hyundai’s i30 or Kia’s Cerato but seat comfort excellent.

The driving experience top class though, great steering, ride and economy and despite some hard driving through the week I averaged just 4.8L/100km. Warranty, five year /unlimited kilometre.

I’m David Berthon.
