The Genesis mid sized GV70 SUV takes the challenge up to the European competition

david berthon

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury brand, is slowly changing perceptions of welded on
European car fanciers with models like the premium mid-sized Genesis GV70
SUV I’m driving today – the flagship 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 all-wheel drive GV70 at
$84,600. The five-seater cuts more of a tailored line to the larger GV80, the grille
not so bold and in your face. The drivability first class aided by a stack of driver
assist technology and excellent road grip although the lane keep assistance can
be over-reactive, but you can turn it off. Ride firm on 21-inch alloy wheels shod
with low profile 40-series Michelin tyres and it only comes with a space saver
spare. Handling top class with very assured steering – the Genesis GV70 best
described as athletic. Thirsty though, the best I could achieve was 13.5lL/100 with
a mix of driving. Superbly detailed in terms of materials and fit and finish –
tasteful in a western sense with more character in some ways to the European
competition. The dash well thought out with a long 14.5-inch-high resolution
infotainment screen, an excellent 360-degree camera. and a separate and very
practical control panel. Genesis may not yet have the badge presence of a
Mercedes, BMW or Audi but its fast getting there. I’m David Berthon
