The death of 5 & 10 cent coins
Tony Shields, from Shields Stamps and Coins, speaks to Michael about the chief of Australia’s National Mint predicting the “graceful death” of 5 and 10 cent coins within the next decade. This would leave the 20c coin as the lowest value coin in circulation.
Blame is placed on a number of factors including rising inflation, as well as the growth of online purchases and payment despite smaller coins being a mainstay in cafe tip jars and charity tins.
