The daily commute by electric power – a charging experience

David Berthon

I’ve just experienced my first week behind the wheel of an electric car for my daily commute of 35 kms each way to and from the city. The model, Hyundai’s latest Ioniq EV hatch which I’ll be talking about in coming weeks. The experience was far better than expected, the driving environment of an electric car relaxing, smooth and quiet. With an available range of around 235kms on a full charge I could drive several days without any range anxiety but I wanted to experience the daily charging element to see if it was tedious, and time consuming. Rain on several evenings was a problem but in essence the time taken to plug in and out was negligible, the procedure quite easy and effortless. However from a standard single phase power outlet the time taken overnight was 12 hours. Obviously with three-phase power the experience would be quicker and with a specialist wall box charger quicker again – more on electric cars in a few weeks. I’m David Berthon
