Tax breaks for farmers to donate imperfect produce

The country’s largest food relief charity is calling for tax breaks to incentivise farmers to donate their imperfect produce.

7.6 million tonnes of food is wasted every year – but 70 per cent of it is edible.

However, it’s cheaper for farmers to plough food back into the ground or feed it to animals, than it is to donate.

Rural reporter Ella Smith spoke to Foodbank Chief Operations Officer Sarah Pennell, about how why the incentive is needed, and who it would benefit.
