SUV’s continue their rise in popularity

David Berthon

Official V-Facts car industry figures for April show SUV’S continue to be the popular choice with buyers – accounting for 43.6 per cent of the market compared to 33.2 per cent for passenger cars. Light commercials represented nearly 1 in 5 sales taking up 19.4 percent. Comparing last month with April 2017, the sale of small SUV’s rose 33 percent, medium SUV’s by 13.6, large SUV’s by 3.7 percent and upper large SUV’s by 20.6. Despite sedans falling from favour there are some bright spots – Mercedes-Benz C-Class for example continues to be a bright spot – Australia’s most popular luxury car last year gets an update in a few months and Mercedes-Benz has sweetened the entry C200 model of the outgoing series – the Edition C 2-litre four-cylinder at $60,900 drive-away gains a glass power sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, metallic paint and Apple carplay or Android auto. Sitting under the luxury car tax this is a very well spec’d prestige model for the money. I’m David Berthon
