SUVs and light commercials lead the new vehicle market
Supply constraints are still affecting new car sales and March showed a 3.9 per
cent dip compared with March last year. The passenger car market fell by 21.9
per cent while light commercials fared a little better – settling by 9 per cent. SUV
sales on the other hand rose by 5.2 per cent and now represent 55 per cent of all
new vehicle sales year to date, light commercials representing 22 per cent of the
market. Utes made up the top three sellers in March headed by Toyota’s Hilux,
Ford Ranger with the Isuzu D-Max gaining third place, Mitsubishi’s popular
Outlander SUV in fourth, fifth place going to the Tesla Model Y. Japan remains
our biggest source of new vehicles with 25,538 March imports however those
from China grew by 70 per cent over March last year and tallied 15,124. I’m David
