Scientists control lightning strikes with powerful lasers

John Stanley

Ian Connellan, Editor in chief of The Royal Institution of Australia, joins John Stanely to chat about the latest science stories.

This week John discovers how an extremely powerful laser has diverted the course of lightning.

The study, published in Nature Photonics, suggests that lasers could be used instead of, or in addition to, physical lightning rods.

They could ultimately be used as extra, portable protection for airports and other big infrastructure.
