A released child-sex offender, subject to a High Court ruling, faces three charges for violating reporting obligations by using Instagram, TikTok, and a live chat facility to contact a juvenile. The Senate approved Labor’s preventative detention laws, set to pass parliament by Thursday.

The government expedited voting after a third released detainee, Emran Dad, previously a child exploitation group leader, was arrested in Melbourne. Dad faces nine charges, including contacting a child without excuse, breaching reporting obligations, and unauthorized use of social media and online chat services.

Anthony Albanese, Home ­Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles have not made public ­appearances to address the arrests of the three former detainees.

Luke is joined by Opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan, who has called on the Prime Minister to publicly address the High Court’s landmark “NZYQ” decision and assure the community it would be safe over Christmas.  He describes the latest developments as “deeply, deeply concerning”.
