Peugeot’s upgraded 5008 SUV pushes into premium territory

David Berthon

Driving Peugeot’s upgraded 5008 SUV today – with the smaller 2008 and 3008 the 5008 gives the French car maker an appealing trio of SUV’s but they come at a price. The 5008 GT in front drive only – I drove the petrol GT six-speed automatic at $51,990, no fire breather but never breathless, a really pleasant driver on the open road, with competent handling and no body roll,  sharp steering, impressive brakes and with an unflustered ride. Seats, always a Peugeot high point, gained top marks from Mrs Berthon for comfort on a long drive but came in for criticism for lack of power adjustment on the passenger side. The cabin, with the introduction of a large 10-inch centre infotainment screen, is classy and well laid out.

Some functions, via the touchscreen are tedious and distractive, a fairly common complaint with many such touchscreens today. I really liked the drivability of the 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine and six-speed automatic, a nice level of torque with the benefit of steering wheel mounted manual shift paddles – the steering wheel with a flat top and bottom very well thought out and pleasant to use. Peugeot’s 5008 pushes the price barrier into premium territory but offers a point of difference – its distinctive, extremely comfortable and lacks little in specification. Service costs, $2803 over the first five years.
