Peugeot 308 GT hot hatch – $39,990 but feeling much more like a prestige performance car.
Peugeot has always had a strong image with older motorists and with just 2,445 sales last year is today very much a niche player in the market, its best seller and representing nearly 50 per cent of sales is the very accomplished 3008 SUV. The small 308 five-door hatch managed just 374 sales last year but Peugeot Australia recently launched a limited edition 308 GT hot hatch that’s been quickly snapped up by enthusiasts. Just 140 were brought in and on checking this week just 25 are left in stock nationally – at $39,990 the Peugeot 308 GT is a very special car – sharply priced.
Superbly equipped, it feels more like a prestige performance car and it’s loaded with driver technology and creature comforts and inclusions. A 1.6-litre 165LkW turbo four linked to an eight-speed automatic with manual shift paddles – the automatic super smooth. Two drive modes – Eco and Sports – in the latter the steering sharpens, the ride height drops 7 – 10mm front to back and the damper rates stiffen – but importantly, its not harsh on 18-inch alloys and 225 x 40–series tyres. Active safety elements abound – the black Alcantera sports seats nicely bolstered and not boy racer in style – only minus – the graphic display on the centre infotainment screen old hat and hard to interact with quickly. Warranty – five years unlimited kilometre and roadside assistance.
