Nissan’s second generation Juke SUV now more mainstream in appearance but arrives in a far more competitive small SUV segment.

David Berthon

Seven years ago Nissan Australia launched their small Juke SUV, a rather unorthodox somewhat weird looking SUV that really divided opinion in the styling stakes and affected sales. Just 49 left showrooms in September  compared to 1188 for the segment leading Mazda CX-3. A second-generation Juke has just arrived more mainstream in appearance but still somewhat edgy in a longer wider body sitting on a 106mm longer wheelbase. Four models from the entry $27,990 ST and running up to the top spec $36,490 Ti. Not inexpensive, dearer to the superseded model but also superior in the safety, technology and feature departments with noticeably better materials and finishes in a much roomier cabin.

The 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine remains, but now linked to just one transmission choice – a new seven-speed dual clutch automatic which can at times get a little fidgety. Nevertheless, the three-cylinder engine performance is great and with a 10 per cent sharper steering ratio the latest Nissan Juke provides a zippy driving experience, offset at times by a somewhat jittery ride. I managed 6.1L/100 with a mix of city and country driving although it does require a diet of 95 RON premium fuel. Importantly, it comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating and a 5 year/Unlimited kilometre warranty. High points, a great interior with very nice finishes and excellent boot space superior to the bob tailed Mazda CX-3.
