New project helping protect honey bees

Victorian authorities are installing artificially intelligent beehives at local ports to keep varroa destructor away from the state’s bee population.

The Purple Hive project is trialing technology that monitors bee populations in real-time, which won’t replace the need for in-hive inspections but will increase efficiency.

Rural reporter Sophie Clarke caught up with Agriculture Victoria’s Nikki Jones to hear more about the project.
