Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute far from a success
One of the surprises this year has been the lack of success of Mercedes–Benz’s X-Class ute – in a light commercial sector that represents 20 per cent of new vehicle sales the X-Class has only achieved 1183 sales year-to-date, well below class leaders like Toyota’s Hilux which managed 22,033. The Mercedes X-Class ute arrived around 18 months ago with huge promise, on the basis that many felt the presence of a three-pointed star on the grille of a utility would be a sure fire for success. However, the Nissan Navarra-based X-Class ute has not met the German company’s expectations world-wide – a product of Mercedes Van division there’s even been rumours that management were considering axing the diesel model altogether. The Van division has recently been reviewing and realigning its strategic orientation due to a big downturn in diesel sales. In Australia last month no 4 x 2 Mercedes-Benz X-Class utes were sold and only 111 in 4 x 4 form.
