Mazda’s CX-5 SUV gets some mid-life upgrades

David Berthon

For some years now Mazda’s mid-size CX-5 has been the top-selling SUV under $60,000. However, this year, Toyota’s much hyped new RAV4 has stolen its mantle especially with its in demand hybrid variants.  As such Mazda have just updated the 14-model CX-5 range with some new technology, new safety equipment and improved cabin quietness. On top of that all-wheel-drive CX-5’s gain an off-road traction assist function – the push of a button now links the AWD and traction control systems effectively locking the rear differential providing better tractability in the rough. Maxx Sport models and above get manual paddle gear shifters while all models gain an advanced autonomous emergency brake function and smart city brake support adding nighttime pedestrian protection. Further improvements have been made to reduce cabin noise while the entry CX-5 Maxx gets a larger 8-inch display screen. Prices rise by $100 on the entry Maxx variants and by $200 on the rest of the range – the 2.5-litre automatic Touring AWD now $40,980.
