Managing Fatigue on our Roads

David Berthon

Despite the worst holiday road toll for some years we still hear the same old rhetoric. From Government- our Roads Minister Melinda Pavey quick to point out that speed was the contributing factor. But there’s a lot more to the road toll than just speeding. We all know that fatigue is a major contributor emphasized by the fact that two thirds of road deaths occur in regional N.S.W. I get rather tired of seeing large bill board advertising on the M2 Motorway for example telling me that 1/3 of all road fatalities is due to fatigue – we all know that, it’s been well publicised on this radio station and elsewhere for some years – why not use the bill board space to tell motorists how to better manage fatigue and how to stay alert. Many city drivers only head into the country once a year, long distance driving is foreign to them and surely they need some well publicized advice as to how best to tackle it. I’m David Berthon
