Lexus’s entry RX300L SUV – improved drive-ability with added features and a sharper price.

Talking further on Lexus’s update on its latest large RX series SUV – I tested the entry model, the five-seat front drive RX Luxury, $1,600 more affordable at $71,920. It might be the most affordable of the 18-model RX range but it wants for nothing, gaining a lot more specification, noticeable driving and ride improvements and a big lift in its infotainment user interface – now with a larger high clarity 12.3 inch screen. Now a touch screen so you can steer clear of the dreadful touchpad controller that is the biggest minus on most Lexus’s. Styling changes are minimal – new style lights, now cornering on the front and a more refined spindle grille.  Thankfully, unlike its German competitors the option list is minimal and relates to paint and trim. This base RX300 also gains a hands free kick sensor on the power tailgate – great for shopping while dynamic safety elements have been improved gaining night-time pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection on the pre-collision safety system and autonomous emergency braking. But driving dynamics represent a big improvement – a heavier rear stabilizer bar and recalibrated electric steering has answered criticism for the previous models body roll. The 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder smooth, linked to a six-speed auto with paddle shifters. The RX300 Luxury now feels much sharper on road, high points, value for money, fabulous power seats, ride quality and  fit and finish.
