Jim Haynes’ not-so-famous Aussie characters

Phil O'Neil

Aussie historian, author & entertainer Jim Haynes joins Overnight each week for his unique knowledge of the not-so-famous characters from Australia’s history. This week Jim shines the spotlight on George Finch – Chemist and mountaineer.

George Ingle Finch MBE FRS (4 August 1888 – 22 November 1970) was an Australian chemist and mountaineer. He was the first person known to climb to a height exceeding 8,000 metres and the man who invented the PUFFER JACKET – which was scorned and laughed at by Mallory and the other British mountaineers.

His obituary in The Times describes him as “one of the two best Alpinists of his time”.
