This week Jim shines the spotlight on – William Dawes.
Dawes Point, in Sydney Harbour, is named after a remarkable man.
William Nicolas Dawes (1762–1836) was an officer of the British Marines, an astronomer, engineer, botanist, surveyor, explorer, abolitionist, and colonial administrator.
He travelled to New South Wales with the First Fleet on board HMS Sirius and also the first European on record to defend Aboriginal rights.
