‘I was honoured’: Little Pattie recalls entertaining Australian troops in Vietnam

Bill McDonald

Patricia Amphlett , better known as Little Pattie, was just 14 when she released her debut single “He’s My Blonde Headed, Stompie Wompie, Real Gone Surfer Boy” back in 1963.

Then, at just 17 years old, Little Pattie joined a life-changing entertainment tour for the troops fighting in the Vietnam War.

Little Pattie Amphlett told Bill McDonald on 4BC Mornings, “I had a brother three years older whose number had not come out in that ballot, and they all looked like his mates.”

“I thought I was back in my own neighborhood with all the growing families, including lots of 19-year-old boys, they just look the same, except they had uniforms on.”

“They were the best audience, they smiled and they laughed and clapped like mad, and we felt like we were home in a most unusual situation. It was beautiful,” Ms Amphlett continued.
