Hyundai’s electric IONIQ 5 steals the show for 2021
In many ways I’ve been somewhat of cynic when it comes to pure electric cars. Hybrids yes but pure electric rather ho-hum. Having said that my recent drive in Hyundai’s battery powered IONIQ 5 left me raving from the roof top. As I said a few weeks back one of the most interesting and technically impressive cars of 2021. And its received some impressive plaudits elsewhere since.
I have never driven a new car that has garnered so much attention – pedestrians immediately notice the IONIQ 5 – visually striking in a futuristic way, a clever mid-sized five-door electric crossover SUV with a spacious cabin and flat floor that purveys a space age feel. Sitting on a long 3 metre wheelbase with short overhangs and distinctive 20-inch wheels.
Two models, single electric motor rear drive at $71,900, and dual electric motor all-wheel-drive $75,900. I drove the latter, with three drive modes, Eco, Normal and Sport – the performance even in Eco brisk, the ride and handling package absolutely superb. Offering a 430 km range the Hyundai IONIQ 5 gains a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and a five-year service plan.
Power comes from a 72.6kw/hour battery the combined output of both electric motors 225kW and 605 Nm. Hyundai IONIQ 5 is just so impressive it will win over the most ardent critics of electric power.
